Welcome to the Diploma of Applied Education (DAE) English Language course!

This 120-hour English Language course is one of three common core courses offered as part of the Diploma of Applied Education programme.


The modules, units and activities in this course are designed to help you develop the skills you need to communicate your ideas effectively in English and to actively pursue academic and career aspirations.

Aims

The Diploma of Applied Education English Language curriculum aims to:
  1. Equip you with the English linguistics knowledge and skills for effective communication in familiar and less familiar contexts.
  2. Consolidate and develop your English language competency required for effective social interaction, further study, vocational training and work.
  3. Enhance your interest and confidence in using English.
  4. Broaden your knowledge, understanding and experience of various cultures in which English is used.
  5. Expand your repertoires of English usage for everyday communication, academic and vocational purposes.
  6. Develop your independent, lifelong learning skills and positive values and attitudes to meet the needs of our rapidly-changing, knowledge-based society.

Intended learning outcomes (ILOs)
Upon successful completion of this course, you should be able to use increasingly complex English skills in a range of everyday and extended situations to:

Spoken Communication Skills
  • Use appropriate vocabulary, accurate grammar and positive non-verbal communication resources to communicate information, ideas, intended meanings, views, attitudes and feelings in spoken texts at a normal rate of speech.
  • Comprehend and take notes from spoken texts of moderate length accurately.
  • Participate effectively in oral interactions involving different audiences and purposes.
  • Identify consonants and vowels in words and pronounce words more accurately.
Written Communication Skills
  • Identify main ideas and supporting details in written texts of moderate length, within familiar and less familiar contexts.
  • Evaluate different points of view and arguments in written English texts of a range of genres that match students’ needs and interests.
  • Use appropriate vocabulary, accurate grammar and supplemental multimedia resources to present information, ideas, views, attitudes and feelings clearly and coherently in major text types.
  • Organise and integrate information and ideas from different sources to DAE English Language Course Guide teacher 4 write texts for everyday practical and academic purposes.
  • Express ideas, views, attitudes and feelings using the language focus items learnt in each module
Independent Language Learning Skills
  • Develop a plan of action for independent English language learning
  • Use available resources (online and resources at school) to expand English language learning in natural and realistic settings

評估
You must fulfill the following conditions to obtain a pass in this course:
  1. at least 50% overall marks
  2. at least 80% attendance

The assessment for this course will cover all aspects of your study: reading, writing, listening and speaking. The details of how you will be assessed are explained in this section.


Continuous assessments


Assignments (30%)

Three course assignments will be administered; one each at the end of Modules 2, 5 and 6. Each of these assignments will carry a weighting of 10% of the total course marks. Each assignment will consist of an individual written or spoken English task related to the module that has just been completed.


Individual student portfolio (10%)

To engage you in the process of constant reflection and to encourage you to learn from constant feedback on your learning, 10% of the course marks are based on a portfolio which includes the following items to be completed throughout the course:

  • Read aloud (2%): You will have to read a passage at a normal speed. You may practise the passages at home and be given two minutes to read aloud one randomly selected passage in the assessment.
  • Reading comprehension (2%): You will have to complete a timed reading comprehension exercise in each term, each of which offers you a chance to reflect on your reading ability.
  • Self-learning tasks (6%): You will have to finish at least 6 self-learning tasks on the online platform or from the course teacher throughout the course. Your work will be assessed on the quality/content and quantity/effort.

You are required to keep a record of the portfolio items and will be asked to submit your portfolio at the end of the course.


Class participation (10%)

To clearly articulate performance expectations and to encourage active learning in class, a Class Participation Guide is developed.


Summative assessment


Examinations (50%)

The two examinations will assess your listening, reading and writing skills:

  • The mid-term examination will be based on topics covered in Modules 1–3. This exam will count for 20% of the total course mark.
  • The final examination will be based on topics covered in Modules 4–6. This exam will count for 30% of the total course mark.
